Last month, 3,900 people lost their jobs due to advancements in artificial intelligence, according to the latest jobs report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. This is the first time AI has been mentioned as a cause of job loss in a report by the firm.

“I think what we're seeing is [companies] experimenting,” says Morgan Frank, an assistant professor at the School of Computing and Information at the University of Pittsburgh. “We’ve been at an equilibrium, technology has disrupted the equilibrium, and people are [now] trying to figure out where the new equilibrium will be.” But we shouldn’t take this report to mean that companies are replacing workers with AI en masse, explains Frank. “I don’t see that that’s prevalent at the moment,” he says.
